By day, there’s no mistaking it. Toronto’s CN Tower. A landmark. An icon. But now, nightime and become light-time.

Toronto Star CollaborationUsing light emitting diodes (LEDs,) and something called Chromacore technology, the CN Tower will never look quite the same, at least after dusk. The new system, made up of more than 1,300 separate fixtures using light-emitting diodes, will turn the tower into a nightly lightshow as of June 28th. And there will be no shortage of colours.

The computer-controlled system can produce more than 16.7 million colours, and according to a press release, an infinite variety of lighting effects. They apparently include making the observation desk look like either a UFO or an electric mushroom and making the elevators look like inchworms on acid. Compared with the rest of the Toronto skyline, the tower always stood out, but never quite like this.

The press release says the new system uses 10% less energy than the previous dimly lit tower, and that the light won’t spill and interfere with nearby hotels, office towers, and condos. If you like it, you can look forward to this every night. And if you don’t, get used to it, the new Tower of Power is here to stay.
